About

Midwifery Care NYC is a group of three midwives, Shar La Porte, Lindsey Mayo, and Julia Steinrueck, all NYS Licensed Midwives (LM), Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNM), and Registered Nurses (RN).

Shar’s journey toward home birth midwifery began 28 years ago with the birth of her first child. Her desire was kindled by the skilled, compassionate support of midwives who upheld agency and autonomy throughout the experience. Shar realized that midwifery was more than a profession; it was a calling—a way to empower and support families during one of the most transformative moments of their lives. She has served families as a midwife since 2009.

Lindsey’s dream of becoming a midwife was cemented through her work with Family Care International, a NY-based non-profit focused on making childbirth safer for people in rural and indigenous communities in Africa and Latin America. She attended her first birth as a doula for one of her childhood best friends in 2010, igniting her desire to attend and support birthing people. She was a staff midwife at Metropolitan Hospital Center for 5 years prior to coming to home birth.

Julia’s love of birth and midwifery started when she was 17 years old and had the privilege of shadowing a homebirth midwife for a year. Since that time, she has worked as a doula and homebirth assistant, as well working as a labor and delivery nurse for over 5 years in a busy NYC hospital.

Julia’s clinical midwifery background includes experience in both hospital and community birth settings. Her practice is grounded in evidence-based care, informed consent, and collaborative decision-making.

As seasoned and passionate midwives, we are dedicated to ensuring equitable and comprehensive care for all, including individuals assigned female at birth, non-binary, transgender, and gender-diverse individuals throughout their lifespan. We base our approach through listening to each person's unique stories, tailoring guidance to their needs, and creating an environment of safety, trust, and respect. With all families, we balance traditional midwifery with Western medical care, fostering a unique personal connection, respecting cultural values, and championing each person’s right to informed decision-making.
