Small Things Grow Midwifery
Robina Khalid
About
Robina (she/her/hers) has been attending births as a midwife for over a decade. She grew up with her feet on two continents, reading books on Brooklyn stoops and running through rainstorms on rooftops in Lahore, Pakistan. These experiences as a working-class, biracial, bicultural child awoke in her a deep curiosity about the world, which initially led her to complete a PhD in English with a focus on race and gender in early America at the CUNY Graduate Center, but ultimately brought her to midwifery. She received her Master of Midwifery at SUNY Downstate with top honors for both clinical achievement and research, and subsequently worked in a high-volume public hospital, advocating for the rights of some of the most vulnerable people in our city while attending the safe and loving births of their babies. She founded her homebirth practice, Small Things Grow, in 2017.
For Robina, midwifery is a practice of devotion, presence, real connection, and deep remembering, where the skill and advancements of modern medicine can coexist with sacred intuition and ancient wisdom — and where everything is rooted in a deep belief in her clients' inner knowledge, capacity, and innate worth. Her approach is holistic, intersectional, and anti-oppressive, and centers trauma awareness and emotional and spiritual integration.
When Robina is not serving as a midwife, you can find her supporting newer midwives in her mentorship program, Tideshifts; curling up with a book; writing her own (forthcoming from Beacon Press in 2028); or swimming in any body of water. She finds her deepest joys learning and traveling with her husband and their four unschooled children, all born at home.
