Lisa Benedetto, MSN, CNM, LMIndian Creek Midwifery & Birth Center
I first began practicing midwifery in Boulder, Colorado where I spent the majority of my adult years living in the Rocky Mountains and raising my daughter, Sierra. I graduated from Colorado University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s in Nursing and went on to complete a Master of Science in Nurse-Midwifery from Frontier Nursing University in 2009. I have attended over 1000 births and supported many more laboring mothers along the way. I am a member of the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and the New York State Association of Licensed Midwives (NYSALM). My midwifery experience during the past 10 years includes practicing in busy hospitals, rural birth centers and lovely private homes. Over the years, I have learned that attending home births is where my midwife heart is fullest! Most importantly, owning and operating my own practice allows me to provide the most competent, compassionate, individualized care that I am able to. Supporting physiologic birth and assisting women to make informed decisions are a few of the important values that help guide the services I offer.
I look forward to meeting you and your family. |
Debora Bissonnette, CNMSeptember Hill MidwiferyDeb has been taking care of mothers, babies, and families for over 30 years. (OB nurse,13; CNM, 17+) Her greatest joy flows from protecting the sacred journey of birth for the family. Birth matters. Deb would be honored to assist you as go through your journey into becoming parents.

Julie Carlson, LM, CNM, MSWMama Bear MidwiferyI am a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM), a Licensed Midwife (LM) and I also hold a Master's in Social Work. I became a midwife because I want health care to be a positive, empowering, and transformative experience. Whether it be a check-up, family planning or home birth, we all have the right to be treated with compassion, respect, and as the expert of our own experience.
I graduated from Nurse Midwifery school at the University of California, San Francisco in 2007. I started my career as a hospital based midwife and am very appreciative of the diverse experiences I have had which have ranged from home-like natural birth experiences to caring for clients with high-risk pregnancies. I moved to home birth in 2015 to support a wider variety of natural birthing options. I also wanted to have more quality time with clients and continuity of care. Along with Midwifery, I have a passion for herbalism, martial arts, yoga, the outdoors, and gardening. I am grateful to my ancestors, midwife elders, family, and friends who have supported me along my path. I cover a 45-60 mile radius around Hamilton, NY. |

They can be trusted to take responsibility for their choices. She believes that birth can be life changing in many complex ways and that the opportunities for growth through this amazing life process are rich and infinite. Her calling and life’s work is to care for women, their families, and their babies with these core beliefs as guiding principles. Her return to homebirth is a celebration and a rekindling of her commitment to women and birth.

As a Licensed and Certified Professional Midwife, I have a special focus on Home Birth. I am also the mother of two grown daughters, a wife, a grandmother, a teacher of families, doulas and midwife apprentices, a childbirth educator, a birth activist and founder of the Family Life Center. I am one of the founders of BirthNet, a local non-profit organization whose mission is to educate the public about maternity care in order to improve it. I am currently working hard building the Birth Justice Coalition to address vast disparities in maternal and infant mortality for women of color in Albany. I train doulas and am happy to have seen the number of doulas in the Capital District grow exponentially since I began our trainings. I received my Registered Nurse license in New York in 1980. After apprenticing for 15 years with two local birth professionals, I earned my Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) credential from the North American Registry of Midwives in 1998. In September, 2010, I earned my Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Midwifery from the National College of Midwifery. I received a license as a Midwife in NY State (LM/CNM) in 2011. Nuranisa Rae, MSN, LM, CNMNur MidwiferyThe role a midwife holds in the community, empowering each family, despite our differences offers a unique yet incredibly powerful opportunity to plant seeds of change, provide respectful care and bring babies into this world gently and peacefully. This was my calling to midwifery. I first became a labor and delivery nurse and a doula, caring for high-risk women and families in New York City. I graduated from the midwifery program at New York University and began attending births and providing well-woman care at home. My role as the midwife is to allow for the physiological process of pregnancy and birth and to be aware of the mother and baby's health and well-being throughout the process and to also address any possible anxiety or fears that may arise before, during and after labor and birth. Pregnancy and birth can be a time of vulnerability and an opportunity to have a relationship with women and families through the year of pregnancy, birth and postpartum, offering empowerment through respectful shared decision making about health and well-being of mothers and babies.
|
Heidi Ricks, LMHeartSpace MidwiferyI came to birth work because I felt drawn by both the vulnerability and the power of pregnancy and birth. I continue my work as a midwife because it brings such joy to witness women and families transform as they prepare to welcome their babies. HeartSpace is the culmination of many years working with families in the area. We provide individualized, evidence-based care based firmly in trusting midwife/family relationship.

Susan Rannestad LM, IBCLCRiver and Mountain MidwivesWhen I was a child and people would ask me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would look up at my Mom, a little shy, and she would say "a teacher or a nurse" then I would speak up and say "and a MOMMY." Now, as a Midwife I get to realize both my Mother's and my own dreams. Helping people learn more about their own healthcare and watching them make choices that are right for their families has been a gift to my own life. Being a Midwife for the last 30 years means I get to watch women be good mothers everyday. That is what I want for myself as well, to be a good Mother.
|
Sunday W. Smith, CNMAs a Certified Nurse Midwife, I provide evidence based prenatal, birth, and postpartum care for families in the North Country planning to birth at home. I also provide well-woman care across the life cycle.
|
Barbara Smith-Foy, CNMAs a Midwife, I see feminine health and birth as a foundation for community.
Every woman deserves positive, self affirming, comprehensive health care. My role is to honor, support and educate women about their bodies while upholding their innate knowledge, to guide their health care decisions. The most gratifying result is building a relationship based on shared decision making; rooted in education, self acknowledgement and the belief in a physiological approach to health. |
Janet Schwab, MSN, CNM, LMBesholem BirthBesholem translates to safe, intact, unharmed. I chose this name for my new midwifery practice because it so aptly describes my philosophy as a midwife. My role is to guide mothers, newborns and families through the pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience where normalcy is protected and supported. If health concerns arise, my knowledge and experience continues to protect the physical and psychological health of the birthing family.

April Ward, MSN, CNM, LMSeptember Hill MidwiferyI was trained in freestanding birth centers in Tennessee and Florida, graduating from Vanderbilt University in 2001. Since returning to New York State in 2002, I’ve had the privilege to care for families in a variety of community and hospital settings. The home waterbirth of my oldest daughter forever changed my life and my approach to birth. The arrival of an adopted daughter and a set of twin daughters completed my family. With each new baby, a new family is born. This is a sacred time - the choices we make about birth reflect our values and set the tone for the family we want to become.
September Hill Midwifery offers home birth and home-away-from-home birth in our beautiful Stork’s Nest BirthSpace. I see clients for prenatal, postpartum, and well-woman care in Burdett, NY and Skaneateles, NY. I would love to hear from you! |
